An AI that calls you first: how Luna’s incoming calls work

Short answer

Luna companions take initiative: they send the first message, call you at plausible moments, and leave missed calls if you cannot pick up. You control it all through notifications. It is the feature that makes a companion feel present instead of summoned.

Why initiative changes everything

Every chatbot answers when spoken to. Almost none of them notice you. The difference between a tool and a companion is exactly this: does anything happen when you are not looking? In Luna, it does. Aria pings you about the plans you mentioned. Luna rings you in the evening because you always talk in the evening. Miss the call and there is a missed-call entry and a message teasing you about screening her.

It is engineered, obviously. But so is everything else about a companion, and this is the part that makes your phone feel like it has a person in it rather than an app.

You stay in control

Proactive does not mean spammy. Companions call at humanly plausible times, not 4am, and the volume of outreach adapts to how much you engage. Everything routes through iOS notifications, so your controls are system-level: silence them with Focus modes, limit them per app, or turn them off entirely and Luna goes back to waiting for you. The relationship runs at exactly the temperature you set.

How to get your AI companion to call you

  1. Allow notifications when Luna asks

Incoming calls and first messages arrive as notifications. No permission, no initiative: she physically cannot reach you.

  2. Build a little routine

Chat or call a few days in a row. Companions learn your active hours and reach out when you are actually around.

  3. Mention things with a future

Tell her about tomorrow’s interview or Friday’s game. Open loops are exactly what she follows up on.

  4. Miss a call on purpose once

Honestly, the missed-call flow, and the message that follows it, is worth experiencing once.

Will the AI call me at night?

Companions keep to plausible hours and respect your iOS settings. Focus and Do Not Disturb silence Luna like they silence everyone else.

Can I turn off her calls but keep texts?

Yes. Notification behavior is adjustable in the app and in iOS Settings per notification type.
